Sam: Initial ideas on storyboard

As you can see I have made a storyboard template. It consists of the proposed narrative based on the film 'spin'. Also the planned dual narrative and romantic ending.
Basically, I have an idea where many different things happen to a man and women which eventually means them meeting in the end.

Sam: Summary of what I am looking to do

I have decided to make a romantic drama short film targeting young adults and above. The film is going to based around the film ‘spin’, where there is an idea that one thing has an effect on another and so on, an almost snowball effect. After looking at the target audience of my film I come to a conclusion I need to have a nice ending for the females, with a subtle and non obvious build up for the males. I feel it is best if it is set in an outside public place, and for the characters to wear between casual and smart casual clothes. I need this setting to be were a lot of people will be placed at one time, and where your common adult can relate to. There are certain expectations I need to meet in this short film:
Shock – Good quality camera work and editing.
Surprise – Well crafted soundtrack.
Realism – Genuine actors and narrative.
Romance- Narrative Driven: A dual narrative, ending with something special.

Sam: Pleasures and expectation for my film

After looking at what my audience have come to expect when watching films, I am now going to discuss some cunning ways to meet these certain pleasures:
• Realism (mainly for males)
• Shock
• Surprise
• Romance (narrative)

Firstly to make this short film realistic, it is relied upon two things in particular. It is going to need a sharp, down to earth narrative and good actors. There is no way my short film is going to be realistic with a cheesy plot and unconvincing actors.
To give me an element of shock in my film, I have got to make my camera work and editing outstanding. I need to use the camera and editing software to keep the audience guessing. For example I will try to cause a bit of confusion by having a quick edit pace. Also by not using too many long shots so the audience do not have much of an inkling what is going on, then I hit them with something special at the end for example.
The touch of surprise can be enhanced by the contribution of the soundtrack. I do not think in this type of film it is necessary to have any speech, just like in ‘spin’. I can make the soundtrack sound very basic and normal at the start so that the audience do not think anything peculiar is going to happen. Then the soundtrack can really come into its own when the surprise in unveiled, by getting faster and louder.
Now getting romance in my film is down to one thing and one thing only, the narrative. Taking into account how the likes of quick edits and so on can really cause shock and surprise, I think it would be brilliant if these quick edits could be going back and forth between two different stories. I will keep you posted on this.

Sam: Target audience for my film

When making any film it is paramount you research into your proposed target audience in depth. I will now need to look at what the best ways are to achieve this.
Firstly the narrative or plot of a short film really has to be spot on if you want it to appeal to a certain audience. Generally speaking, romantic films with happy endings appeal to the female audience. Whereas it seems that clever, subtle and non-obvious narratives interest males. Therefore to target my proposed audience this is something I will definitely keep in mind when scripting and storyboarding my film.
Another way to appeal to an audience is the costume the characters are wearing. As I want this film to attract your common adult, I feel it will be best if it is set in an outside public place, for them to wear between casual and smart casual clothes. This is primarily what your normal adult would wear in a shopping centre for example.
That brings me on nicely to the setting of my film. After watching ‘spin’, I like the thought of having it were a lot of people are going to be at one time. This would make my short film realistic, as this will mean it is more likely things are going to arise and have a knock on effect to people around them. Also it will need to be somewhere any adult can relate to, for example a ballroom dance in a mansion is not going to interest the audience I am looking to target. I will keep you posted on my different Ideas for the setting of my film throughout the project.

Sam: Short film inspiration

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP59tQf_nj
This was definetly the sort of inspiration I needed to make a decision on my narrative. This is going to be the short film im going to base my own film around, but i will also definetly try and put my own touch to it aswell. Whilst looking at some useful information on short films, I will be trying to pull some ideas on a storyboard template.

Sam: Decision on the form and target audience of my film

After some research on narrative structure and pleasure and expectations of films, i think i now am ready to make a decision on the form of my film and which audience i will attempt to target. Personally when talking about this issue to former member of my group, i wasnt too sure about an animated short film. After exploring and enquiring about the level of software we have in our school, I thought it was best we dont no pursue with animation. As said before the other option was a drama peice based around a clever narrative. I am sure this suits me best as I can definetly relate to this more from my AS projects. So I now have to scan the web and other resources to gain some inspiration on the actual narrative or plot of my film. After talking about having a brief target audience in my mind earlier, I can confirm I will be targeting both males and females of a young age and above.

Sam: Pleasures and Expectations of films.

When making a short film it is a well known fact that the audience watching are going to have certain pleasures and expectations. What these exactly are depends on which audience you are trying to target and in what genre. In my head I have an idea of targeting a broad audience in typical drama film. This would realistically mean young adults and above.
One pleasure I think all of this audience expects is an element of shock or surprise. For example, an unexpected end is a good way of doing this. As my film will be targeted for males and females I need to find a nice blend of these two tastes. I think we know, without being too stereotype that women tend to like soppy and really romantic films. Furthermore females seem to show their sympathy a lot more than males, meaning they love to feel sorry for someone, or at least one emotional scene. On the other hand, a significant pleasure men expect, almost an unwritten law is to not have too many tears, and for their to be a good degree of realism in a film. Again another dilemma I face is that females like to know exactly what is going on in a film, whereas men like a touch of mystery.
I feel these are the main pleasures and expectation I will need to think about.
The techniques used to go about meeting these pleasures and expectation will be discussed later.

Sam: Narrative structures in films (Vladmir Propp)

After research about this topic i found that when looking at narrative structure its essential you understand that it  assist in the way the story is told and shown, not the actual story itself. This was the best summary i found of exactly what a narrative structure is:
"The narrative structure help defines the story. It needs to be structured to help the viewer understand the message contained within, giving the film meaning throughout."
Evidently, every film needs this structure as the fil would have no meaning which therefore disadvantages the viewer from understanding the story.

A writer named 'Tzvetan Todorov' has a rule of five conventional stages in he thinks is used as a template when writing the narrative. These 5 stages are:

"Stage 1- A state of equilibrium is defined.

Stage 2- Disruption to the equilibrium by some action or crisis.

Stage 3- The Character(s) recognition that there has been a disruption, setting goals to resolve problem.

Stage 4- The Character(s) attempt to repair the disruption, obstacles need to be overcome to restore order.

Stage 5- Reinstatment to the equilibrium. Situation is resolved, a conclusion is announced.

He believed there is far more clarity in your film if you stick to these conventional stages. However this stage do not have to be used chronologically. For example you often see the conclusion being announced (stage 5) at the top of the film.

Propp

Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp born on April 17th 1895 was a Russian formalist scholar. Propp extended the Russian Formalist approach to the study of narrative structure. In the Formalist approach, sentence structures in narrative had been broken down into analysable elements, or "morphemes". Propp used this method by analogy to analyse folk tales.
When analysing 100 different films he came up with 7 main character types which are:

1. The villain — struggles against the hero.

2. The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.

3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.

4. The princess and her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father cannot be clearly distinguished.

5. The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.

6. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.

7. [False hero] — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

Hopefully this research on Todorov and Propp will help me make a well structured conventional film.

Sam : Reflection of the project

After hearing about ryans departure earlier in the year, lloyd being a close mate of his, reviewed what his aspirations were in life. After alot of confusion in the past months on whether he went to pursue a job outside school, it was finalised by our teacher that I would be going it alone on the project. Whilst the confusion sent me off track a little bit, I now know i can get on with what ive been wanting to do on my own terms. At first it was a shock , knowing every decision would be my own, but i feel you have got to take it as a positive. I will take lloyds storyboard research into account when making my own. In the coming days im going to look generally at narrarive structure, pleasure and expectations of all short films. Furthermore with my audience research in mind this should lead me to some important decisions on the making of my own film.

Lloyd: My Role As A Storyboard Designer

To decide on our roles for our group we got together and discussed who would suit each role best. As our groups have changed from the previous year we all thought it would be best to stick with our original roles from last year’s project as we have experience and knowledge on particular roles. This meant that I would be the storyboard designer, James would be the script writer, Sam would be the director and due to Ryan’s departure from media studies we all have taking the role of editors. I believe taking on these roles will help our production be most successful.

After finding out my role I decided to research into storyboarding. When designing a storyboard the graphics can be hand drawn, the idea is to give enough information in the storyboard to help develop the final product. There is loads of professional equipment you can use for creating storyboards but one of the best pieces of equipment is the storyboard pro. This piece of equipment benefits are it reduce cost, it helps visualize your ideas, animate you storyboard and it takes shorter time to produce. Many big companies use storyboard pro such as:
• Cartoon network
• Disney
• Fox
• Sony
• Warner home video

This has helped me understand the role of being a storyboard designer. Although storyboard pro would be a great help in creating a storyboard for my A2 media project I will not use this as I believe I have enough skills to draw a storyboard with enough information for it to be produced into a short film. As our group has decided what we will be doing for our production I can begin to think about doing some drafts of what the short films key scenes will be as trying to do too much too early may affect the outcome because changes will happen due to things like location and characters as they may force our group to reconsider our ideas making sure everything works out ok for the final production of the film.

Sam: Audience For All Short Films

When making any film it is paramount you research your proposed target audience in depth. But before I make a definite decision on my target audience, I will look at how films primarily target their audience.

Firstly the narrative or plot of a short film really has to be spot on if you want it to appeal to a certain audience. Generally speaking, romantic films with happy endings appeal to the female audience. Whereas it seems that clever, subtle and non-obvious narratives interest males.

Sam: Distribution Of Short Films

Sam: Topics

A common question which is asked when talking about short films is why do people make them? well firstly people make short films for a various different reasons. After looking at alot of different short films on 'you tube'  i seem to repeatedly come across charities trying to raise awareness of what is going on in the world around us. These sort of films are not  often done to win prizes but to gain support and followers. the short film 'chicken ala carte' which was studied by one of our group members is a perfect example of this. nevertheless, some short films are made purely on the fact the win prizes at global events to get there companies on the map. Having watched 10 short films on 'you tube' , 4 were comical , 4 were charity based , and two were very dramatical and nurrative structured based. This will be brought up in the next meeting when choosing a form of our film.
something i have definetly learned from studying these films is that, if you have real belief in something, you can express it through a short film. I get the feeling the key element to any short films is creativity and imagination. Also a common occurence in short films, is that the sound is normly a tune or song of some sort, verbal communcation is rare. These different topics will be considered seriously when making our own film.

Sam : Reflection Of The Project

Ryan finally announced he was officially leaving the group today to pursue with his retail management course. It was thought he was going to do a u-turn and carry on doing his A levels, this meant everything came to a stand still. However now me and Lloyd can really crack on and get some intense research done. I felt it was important to call a meeting to get things on track again, so this will be held tomorrow afternoon in the conference room. We will use ryans research and information to hold us in good stead for the future.Meanwhile I am going to expand my background knowledge of the short film genre by looking at the different topics and distribution of short films in general. Also I hope to see some examples of animated and drama short films from lloyd. Finally i have high hopes that we will start to make some key decisions on the form, target audience and pleasures and expectations of our short film. However firstly to make this important decision , I think i need to gain further background knowledge of the why people make films, how they get distributed and finally who they target when doing so.

Sam : First Meeting

Unfortunately our first meeting with the group was a crisis meeting as our teacher revealed Ryan maybe leaving the group to pursue a management course at retail store. My first thought was complete worry as I didn’t know how we would get around it. So a meeting was arranged by me, and Lloyd took the minutes down. After some intense thinking we decided the best idea to overcome this problem was to share the editing between all us two. Fortunately editing is something which is done in the latter stages of the project, so whilst having ideas in mind we could put that on hold till such a time. Me and Lloyd were to determined to keep upbeat and proceed with cracking on with our project.

In the same meeting I thought it was important to start talking about the form of our short film. Quickly, Lloyd said no to documentary based film, as he thought it was too mainstream and we agreed we wanted to do something original and challenging. He then liked the idea of an animation based short film, as he thought the characters we use can be much more comical and authentic. I wasn’t so sure but soon came round after we couldn’t name too many animated short films. Another possibility was a real clever drama piece. After some deep debate we concluded that we don’t know enough about these two forms to choose between them. Furthermore I sent away Lloyd with the task of finding what work needs to go into these two forms and i would get various examples of these short films.

All in all the meeting started very stressful, but after we relaxed a bit we tried to be very focused with the job in hand.

Sam: My Own Job As Director and Scriptwriter

We were told in the lesson that it was time to choose which role in the group each person will take on, after a brief discussion it was evident that this was not going to be a hard task. We decided i would be director, Ryan would be editor, James would be story boarder and Lloyd would be the scriptwriter. This decision initially seems the correct one as we all seem very well suited to these jobs. Ryan’s high intelligence on computer software will give us a really good chance to try authentic ideas out., and finally Lloyd is very articulate and will give us the best chance of having a great script. Also an extra plus is that we have all done these jobs in year 12.

Having been given the job of director I believed it was only right to see how i could build upon my work in year 12. Having looked on the internet i have developed an in depth understanding of a director’s job. In year 12 i saw it as any other job in the film industry, however after reading the importance and responsibility that comes with directing i feel its time to up my game a little bit. A job of director is to make rapid on the spot decisions if they crop up, leading by example and oozing authority. Communicating with team members as well is key as they need to be well informed with any changes you have made etc. It is the biggest job in the team, and i learnt from year 12 the other group members rely on you to bail them out of difficult areas.

I then took sometime out to get some inspiration and guidance from professional directors, so I looked at some of their personal quotes.

I do think that's so much a part of what being a director is - in working with actors - to really try and be sensitive to what each actor needs to get to where he wants to be.

--Bill Condon

One of the great things about being a director as a life choice is that it can never be mastered. Every story is its own kind of expedition, with its own set of challenges.

--Ron Howard

A good director's not sure when he gets on the set what he's going to do.

--Elia Kazan

I have taken all these tips and quotes on board and am confident i can fulfil the role of the director.

James: Research into script writing

For the next part of my research I will be looking at the narrative structure of a short film, the narratology, the plot and the narrative design.

The narrative structure of a short film is not too different to that of a full feature film. The narrative structure is used to help define the basic plot, also the content of the film. The foundation of the film is usually based on the introduction of the film as it is usually used to entice the viewer into watching the rest of the film giving the basic plot and the main characters and circumstances. Vladimir Propp is a Russian formalist who studied the structural elements of Russian fairy tales, he ended up with ‘typology’ of narrative structures, he said that all fairy tale end up with a sequence of 31 stages starting with absentation which is the loss of a family member or confliction with a family, and ends with wedding where the hero marries and ascends the throne. With 7 basic characters; the villain, the donor, the (magical) helper, the princess and her father, the dispatcher, the hero or victim/seeker hero and the false hero. Vladimir studied for many years and found that these basic plots were used in all fairly or folk tales.

Herman Northrop Frye is a literary theorist he was made famous by his theory of literacy criticism and the development of the ‘anatomy of criticism’ starting with this explanation “The purpose of the introduction is to defend the need for literary criticism, to distinguish the nature of genuine literary criticism from other forms of criticism, and to clarify the difference between direct experience of literature and the systematic study of literary criticism.” He was honored with his ‘four essays’ explaining the need for literacy criticism.

Ryan: Target Audience

For our film we have chosen a specific target audience in which we are going to aim our film at, we believe that if our film was to be broadcasted at a large short film festival we would get the ratings by aiming our film at; Young adults approximately 25 years old, mainly males but not excluding the female audience. We have chosen this audience because they will be more exposed to unusual narratives and that’s what we want to base our short film on experimentation with the narrative structure
